Clinical Work:

We are a team of medical students and residents providing COVID-19 education and medical supply/treatment to the Sacramento unhoused population. We have coordinated with Sacramento Emergency Responders to screen unhoused encampment residents using questionnaires and testing those suspected of having COVID-19 with toolkits provided by our County Public Health Department in addition to providing education on the pandemic and preventative/isolation management if camp leaders suspect COVID-19 cases.

Our project aims to take PPE donations from the community and funnel them to the hospital for healthcare worker use. We have been accepting open and unopened unused supplies, but we’re working with the hospital to determine if they’re able to continue accepting opened unused supplies moving forward. So far we’ve accumulated 25,000 PPE items and are looking to now donate to other hospitals as well.

Resource Production and Acquisition:

The Department of Anesthesiology has made a few prototypes of masks using Halyard material, the sterile wrapping for surgical trays. They have done some fit testing to see which masks would pass with EIP and have come up with the best model that may be the most re-creatable. They are hoping that medical students could help with cutting the patterns and wires so that the people sewing may have an easier time (or if there are students that also sew, that process itself will be faster).

Visitation and Check-In:

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the California mandate to stay at home, our already vulnerable older adult population is being forced to further isolate, which is of course in their best interest at this time, but may also have detrimental outcomes in the long run. According to the National Institute on Aging, research has linked social isolation and loneliness to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions: high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death. We created the ASSIST Program to help keep these possible repercussions at bay and believe that your time spent checking in with your paired senior volunteer will be most appreciated and needed.

Outreach and Social Media:

Project Social Connect (PSC) is a social outreach organization whose mission is to examine, address, and alleviate the impact of social isolation on individuals in our community who may be more severely affected, including seniors, children, patients in palliative/hospice or other rehabilitative care, immunocompromised individuals, and family and friends of healthcare workers. This will be accomplished by partnering with local centers to connect our volunteers, collectively referred to as “Circle of Friends”, with individuals in need via phone or other virtual-based platforms. We are planning to offer various individual and group-based activities, such as phone pals, trivia nights, art workshops, creative writing activities, book clubs, open-mic nights, and more.
