IT and Technical Support:
As the medical school transitions to the temporary online curriculum, students have been assisting by: volunteering to teach online lectures via ZOOM, help faculty and staff adjust to online media and platforms like ZOOM, and assist with tutoring and academic support for students in other classes.

Outreach and Social Media:
Over 140 medical students have volunteered to help amplify important public health messages during the COVID-19 outbreak. Students use social media to share messages with their community about safe social distancing, whet no get tested, how to observe good hygiene, and overall – how to “flatten the curve”!

Poverty and Assistance:
The UAB Graduate Student Government, which has SOM representation, has allocated funds to a COVID-19 Emergency Grant Application. Students that qualify can receive up to $500 to assist with unexpected expense(s) caused by the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The money does not need to be repaid. View Link 1, View Link 2.

Screening and Testing:
UAB Medicine recently opened additional testing facilities for COVID-19; prior to making an appointment to get tested, patients must call the UAB COVID-19 Call Center. MS3 and MS4 students volunteering at the call center use an online tool to determine whether individuals meet the criteria for testing and then schedule testing appointments. View website here.

Screening and Testing:
UAB School of Medicine got a call from Christ Health Center that they needed help returning blood test results for over 1500 people who were tested for Coronavirus (COVID-10). Over 100 members of the MS3 and MS4 classes signed up to help deliver the good news that these patients had tested negative and to date over 1400 patients have been contacted.

Wellness:
UABSOM is organized into approximately 18-person learning communities; as we have transitioned to a mostly online curriculum, LC representatives and mentors have ensured that students are well taken care of and that students have appropriate resources. Additionally, online meetings have been established to provide community.
